Boxing Day

Boxing Day
~ Traditional English holiday extends Christmas giving ~

This old English tradition derived from giving money and other gifts to those who were needy and those in service-positions.

As far as I can find out, it actually goes back to the early Roman/early Christian era, when boxes were placed outside churches on Christmas Day. In these boxes, the richer/well-off people would leave offerings for the ‘Feast of Saint Stephen’ ~ which is on the same day as Boxing Day.

Through the ages, this changed to wealthier people and business owners giving money or gifts to their ‘workers’, since they had to wait on their masters on Christmas Day. The servants were then allowed the next day off to visit their families, and the employers would give each servant a box to take home containing gifts and bonuses, and sometimes leftover food.

This then became richer/well-off people leaving boxes of gifts at churches on Christmas Day, so when the poorer working people went to church on the following day - 26th December - they would be able to receive a ‘box’ of gifts.

In present-day England, Boxing Day is a 'bank holiday' so people do not have to work, and instead of giving their children everything in-one-go, some families save one or two presents and then give those on Boxing Day, in order to keep the Christmas “giving” and “sharing” tradition going for more than one day.

Boxing Day is celebrated in Great Britain and in most areas settled by the English (the U.S. is the major exception), including Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

I hope you had a fun Christmas Eve, a wonderful Christmas Day with family and friends, and are having an enjoyable Boxing Day.

Sincerely,
Robin

Olivia Newton-John ~> OKAY, I ADMIT IT ...

Yes, I had a ‘crush’ on Olivia Newton-John when I was a teenager and had a poster of her on my bedroom wall ~ loved her voice and her looks and ...
The strangest thing was (and still is), I am not particularly ‘fond’ of blondes! GO FIGURE!?!

Anyway, here is something that I was unsure of in my teens -> Where is Olivia from? Where was she born? Yes, it kind of gives it away as all this week I have been writing about famous artists from the UK. BUT, most people think she is from ‘down-under’ in “Auzzieland / Australia” ~ which is wrong. Olivia Newton-John was born in Cambridge - 1948 - and moved to Australia at the age of 5, so yes, she is originally from England!

We all know that her singing career (besides her acting and now helping various charities around the world, since she had her own experience with cancer) is very, very long ~ and is still going!

Of all her joint-ventures (singing and acting), probably the most remembered are with Cliff Richard and John Travolta ~ I’m sure you enjoyed “Grease”. Listen to a couple of her songs below and re-live those memories . . .

Good article about her on 'Dear Doctor': http://www.deardoctor.com/inside-the-magazine/issue-21/olivia-newton-john/

Eric Clapton ~

EC Ferrari

Eric Clapton was born in a small town called ‘Ripley’ in the county of Surrey (in England, of course).

He is one of the best, most-known guitarusts of all time. And is the ‘only’ three-time inductee into the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”; with ‘The Yardbirds’, with ‘Cream’ and also as a solo artist!!!

Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time. He ranked 2nd in Rolling Stone magasine’s list of “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and 4th in Gibson’s “Top 50 Guitarists of All Time”. THAT should be enough to show how good he really is!

As you can imagine from the photo, he is an avid Ferrari fan, and in 2012, purchased his custom-made Ferrari SP12 EC. It is a car based on the Ferrari 458 Italia, with the styling of a Ferrari BB (Clapton's favourite car) and has the headlights of the legendary Ferrari Enzo.

As you can imagine, Eric has numerous “very elegant” homes around the world to match his choice is cars: Surrey - England, Antigua - The Caribbean, Ohio - Columbus, New York, Paris and probably more.

It would take me a couple of days to write a full history about what he has done, where he has played and who he has played with, so go to his official web site and read for yourself: http://www.ericclapton.com/

In the meantime, here are a couple of his great songs that you will know:

Annie Lennox / Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams”

Annie Lennox
Annie Lennox was born in Aberdeen, Scotland (that’s still the UK ;-) in 1954. Making her even more special is the fact that she was born on Christmas Day!

Her name is known by some but then not by others. Once you hear her voice though, you will realise that she is one of the finest and most outstanding musical voices of our time; a singer, songwriter, campaigner and activist, Annie Lennox is celebrated as an innovator, an icon, and a symbol of enduring excellence.

Annie’s music career is peerless with over 80 million record sales to date and winning countless awards, while her tireless charity work is widely praised receiving prestigious awards and honours.

Musically, it was not a great start though - some of you may know the group ‘The Tourists’ - that had a couple of hits but then kinda disappeared into nowhere. She then teamed-up to form the “Eurythmics”, who did much better selling over 75 million albums, and achieved over 20 international hits across the world (listen to her song below ‘Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This’ -> I’m sure you will recognise that).

Besides her music career, she is also a strong activist and campaigner helping people all over the world. In addition to the ongoing SING campaign, Annie is an Ambassador for UNAIDS, Oxfam, Nelson Mandela’s 46664 Campaign, Amnesty International, The British Red Cross, London as well as supporting numerous other organisations.

Also in 2008 Annie was presented with the Award of Merit at the 2008 American Music Awards, broadcast live from the Nokia Theatre in L.A. Previous honourees include Prince, Whitney Houston and Frank Sinatra, that same year Annie released her first ever-solo retrospective album called “The Annie Lennox Collection”. The 14-song collection brings together Lennox’s finest work from her four top-selling solo albums - Diva (1992), Medusa (1995), Bare (2003) and Songs of Mass Destruction (2007).

In January 2011, Annie Lennox received an OBE in the New Years Honours list. This great accolade was given for all her hard work and dedication as a humanitarian. The British Empire (OBE) was presented by HRH Queen Elizabeth II in June 2011.

That is a brief rundown of Annie Lennox who lives in ‘Nottinghill’ London ~ another of the UK’s amazing pop/rock artists.

There are so many popular/famous artists that are from England and yes, David Bowie is also one of them!

He was born in south London (has the same birthday as Elvis) and changed his name from David Robert Jones to “David Bowie”, as he was worried people would mistake him for ‘Davy Jones’ of The Monkeys.

David Bowie moved to upper Lausanne in Switzerland to find a haven of stability and fade into anonymity, where he purchased an early twentieth-century residence called the Château du Signal in 1982.

Like a lot of artists and famous people, he has homes in various places around the globe ~ the photo being in ‘Mustique’ in the West Indies ~ which is a gorgeous haven -> a definite must-go-to place some day...!

Here are a few interesting things about David Bowie that may not have known:

1. Rock guitarist Peter Frampton was Bowie's friend at school.

2. He was the final guest on Marc Bolan's ITV music show, ‘Marc’, in 1977. Bolan was killed in a car crash in south west London shortly afterwards.

3. His right pupil is permanently dilated - due to being punched in the eye while at school. (The fight was over a girl.)

4. He started playing the saxophone when he was 12 years old.

5. His first ever release was ‘Liza Jane / Louie Louie Go Home’ in June 1964, under the name of Davie Jones with The King-Bees.

6. “Bowie” is pronounced to rhyme with ‘Joey’.

7. At the age of 17, he was interviewed on a BBC programme as the founder of ‘The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men’. He complained: "It's not nice when people call you darling and that".

8. He released his debut album, the self-titled 'David Bowie', in 1967 after playing in a host of pub and club bands.

9. Bowie's first hit in the UK - 1969's 'Space Oddity' - was used by the BBC in its coverage of the moon landing.

10. The fictional character of Major Tom has appeared in three Bowie hits - Space Oddity (1969), Ashes To Ashes (1980) and Hallo Spaceboy (1996).

11. Bowie's first US Number One was his single “Fame” in 1975. It was co-written by John Lennon and features the late former Beatle on backing vocals. (Check end of Blog for link)

12. He was voted Number Four in the recent BBC Culture Show public vote to discover Britain's Greatest Living Icons. Above him were Sir David Attenborough at Number One, Morrissey (2) and Sir Paul McCartney (3).

13. Director Nicolas Roeg cast Bowie in his first leading role, as a stranded alien in 'The Man Who Fell to Earth', in 1976. Also, in the 1986 Jim Henson movie ‘Labyrinth’, Bowie plays “Jareth The Goblin King”.

14. Bowie appeared as 'Pontius Pilate' in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ.

15. Among his oddest film roles are: The Shark in ‘Yellowbeard’ and a sinister FBI agent called “Philip Jeffries” in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: ‘Fire Walk With Me’.

16. Bowie declined the CBE in 2000 and a knighthood in 2003 from the Queen.

17. Bowie married Somalian supermodel Iman in 1992. They have a daughter Alexandria Zahra Jones, born in 2000.

18. Bowie's older brother of nine years Terry, killed himself in 1985. He was the inspiration for songs including Aladdin Sane, All The Madmen, The Bewlay Brothers and Jump They Say.

19. In 2004, he underwent emergency heart surgery in Germany to treat a blocked artery.

20. He has been in 10 bands - The Konrads, The Hooker Brothers, The King Bees, The Manish Boys, The Lower Third, The Buzz, The Riot Squad, The Hype, Tin Machine and Tao Jones Index. (Some of these have performed under other names).

21. Bing Crosby recorded his last ever single with David Bowie. Their duet version of The Little Drummer Boy was recorded for Christmas 1977. It was a hit five years later.

Those are a few little tidbits that you may not have known about this talented artist ~ once one of the most outrageous singers in history, who now lives a quiet-life in New York with his wife and daughter..

Everyone knows of “Phantom Of The Opera” ~

Yes, this week’s “theme” is famous UK pop/rock stars. Yesterday was men, so today it’s the women’s turn...

I am very sure that you also know of “Sarah Brightman”, and may be even have one or two of her CDs (like me), as hey, she won an award in 2000 for selling more CDs than Sir Elton John and The Rolling Stones (also from the UK).

She actually left the UK after her divorce with Andrew Lloyd Webber and eventually became a US citizen. As you can imagine, she has some wonderful homes in London, LA, Miami, France and New York, where she spends most of her time when not on-tour.

And talking about her ‘tour’ ~ next year (2013) she starts her World Tour. When her tour (over five continents) is finished, she will spend 6 months training in Moscow and then off on another trip. Did you hear about that announcement in October -> a ‘live’ announcement played all over the world...

Yes, she will be the First singer to ever go into space, to the International Space Station. The date is not yet confirmed but it is believed to be sometime in 2014. And there may even be a ‘concert from space’!?! WOULDN'T THAT WILL BE OUTSTANDING!

Not only these things but she is the first artist to have been invited TWICE to perform at the Olympics Games; first in 1992 in Barcelona and then in 2008 in Beijing -> wow, a foreign female singer to open the Chinese Olympic Games with Liu Huan ~ that is very impressive, don’t you think!?!

Sarah Brightman’s career and ‘resume’ (helping UNESCO and other charities etc) are something out-of-this-world (and she soon will be), making her another very special world famous artist from the UK.

Watch, listen and enjoy Sarah Brightman’s special video “Dream Chaser”; http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&v=N2pNwTbNnM4&NR=1

See you tomorrow . . .

Sir Elton John’s home

Elton 1

Everyone knows of Sir Elton John, but do you know where he lives?

He actually has several homes (as one can imagine with all the money he makes) ~ Old Windsor, London, Atlanta, LA, Nice and Venice. The most famous is in Old Windsor -> can you guess why?

Well yes, the Queen does also live there ~ that would be a very good reason, as the Queen is not going to ‘just live’ in any old place, don’t you think!?!

Old Windsor was the oldest Saxon town in Berkshire, and continued its importance up until around 1100 when the building of Windsor Castle (the Queen's home) started to overshadow it.

With some buildings and churches dating back to 1216, there is definitely a long list of historic architecture there.

The surrounding countryside is ‘pure Nature’ itself, and includes 1,000 acres (4,046,856 m2) of National Trust land and 4,800 acres (19,424,911 m2) owned by the Crown (THAT is a pretty-large sized back garden!).

Besides the Queen and Sir Elton John, other famous people who live there are:
James Blunt, Michael Parkinson, Lisa Scott Lee, Rolf Harris, Nick Faldo, Prince Andrew, Terry Wogan, Stephen Triffitt, Jimmy Page, Freddie Starr and others. Also, rumour has it that Christina Aguilera and Daniel Craig (James Bond) recently purchased homes there, too.

So if you want to live with the ‘rich and famous’ but don’t fancy Hollywood, then save-up a few pennies and buy your next home in Old Windsor ~

Who’s home shall we go to tomorrow -> see you then . . .

COLD Autumn/Winter leaves ...

Autumn leaves

Blimey, it’s awfully chilly this morning!

The weatherman said we had the first-snow in Kanto today but as you can see from the photo, in a few places you can still find traces of lovely Autumn leaves.

So wrap-up warm, go out for a nice stroll and enjoy the crisp-air. The views are clear, so take a bunch of photos, then come home and have a nice cuppa hot tea.

Enjoy your Sunday . . .
