FLUENT ENGLISH

Let's enjoy English!

FUNNY WORDS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ~

I was actually listening to the radio today and the DJ was definitely from the UK. He had a very strong Cockney-accent and was using a lot of ‘slang’ words while he was talking, so I was actually wondering how much of the audience was understanding what he was saying. It then struck me that I needed to share a few ‘slangy’ words with you, in order for you to have some idea of what they mean if/when you hear a couple of natives chatting-away with each other.

These are in no particular order:

1. Give You A Bell –> Call you
2. Blimey! –> My Goodness
3. Gutted –> Devastated
4. Chuffed –> Proud
5. Fancy –> Like
6. Sod Off –> Piss off
7. Fortnight –> Two Weeks
8. Hoover –> Vaccum
9. Kip –> Sleep or nap
10. Bee’s Knees –> Awesome
11. Know Your Onions –> Knowledgeable
12. Dodgy –> Suspicious
13. Wonky –> Not right
14. Wicked –> Cool!
15. Whinge –> Whine
16. Tad –> Little bit
17. Tenner –> £10
18. Fiver –> £5
19. Quid –> £
20. Taking the Piss –>
21. Screwing around
22. Pissed –> Drunk
23. Loo –> Toilet

Have fun with them ~

Mina says... "No title"
Hi Robin,

Looking at #1. Give you a Bell just reminded me a funny story.
I had a friend who was seeing this Dutch guy, who apparently speaks British English more like American English from the usage and also the terms of his speech (such as, petrol as gasoline, flat as apartment, etc).

One day she called me with a really excited but confused voice and said, " he said he would give me a ring! Do you think that he is ready to be committed with me or will it be just a romantic gift?"

Now that you can tell what made her misunderstand what the guy said. I just found out later and you know how embarrassed she was when he told her what he meant indeed. it was real funny.
